GoDaddy is the world’s largest domain name registrar. As part of their 2016 rebrand process, the company needed a versatile illustration system that would adapt to their diverse customer profiles while aligning with their new brand image and company values.
Since the company works with teams of designers and illustrators from various offices, in-house and abroad, they needed a simple, solid, and reproducible system for character creation and a set of illustration guidelines. All visuals would have to be versatile enough to connect with their clients at a global scale.

I worked with the client to create a system for character production. We came up with a build-your-own-character guide that would allow designers abroad to deliver brand-consistent assets in short periods of time. The characters, like the new illustration style, are serious but approachable and cohesive with the brand’s 2016 identity.
Aside from developing the character style, I refined the new illustrated style and created a set of illustration guidelines. Finally, I put together an asset library in collaboration with my team so that designers could access elements to create illustrations and keep a consistent look throughout the brand's web and print channels.

Based on the existing iconography, I worked on an illustration approach for characters. After I had the approval of the style, I adapted several illustrated scenes to the website’s modules to showcase the style’s versatility.
Then, I started working on a series of rules for creating illustrated assets.
I worked with an already defined color scheme. Illustrations would rely heavily on the use of green while the accent colors would be used sparingly, as a way to emphasize elements or provide contrast.
All illustrations were created using geometric elements. Freehand shapes were off-brand, as they could show personal styles.
Corners were rounded, although radius could vary. Broken lines and patterns could be used to add detail and a humanly imperfect feel. Shadows were solid and depicted at 90° or 30° angles.
Elements would be depicted straight-on with little to no depth-of-field, although depth could be implied through the placement of objects.
All characters were designed using a grid based on several key shapes to ensure consistent proportions.
